As I understand it, the isocyanates are less hazardous when these paints are applied with paint rollers or brushes because isocyanates are not atomized and emissions are lower. It's possible to reinforce a boat's transom in two methods: one by one or layer by layer. The inside corners must be completed with a round fillet to avoid difficulties. It's time to get rid of the rot! If you use too much fiberglass in some areas and not enough in others, you could end up making the boat transom weaker and more susceptible to damage. After the core replacement is complete, the original fiberglass skin can be laminated over the new core or if necessary a new skin can be laminated over the core. Step 8: Apply the final coat of epoxy paint/primer and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before taking your fiberglass boat transom into the water again. Thicken the epoxy with a high density filler to prevent glue sag and to bridge gaps between layers. Epoxy will not effectively penetrate wet wood; the wood has to be reasonably dry. Cut the door skin based on the length of the part that needs replacement.
The wood must be dry and the top must be open. Paint or cover with flexible decking. You do not necessary have to follow the same procedure as the example in this tutorial. If you've got a long time (say 6 months or more) they will eventually air-dry, or you can vacuum dry them, or you can apply blowing warm air, as from a hair dryer. I also laminated the backside of each mahogany layer piece with 6 oz. Water on the floors leaks through and gets into the stringers. An air hammer with a big flat blade and an air compressor is good. Apply epoxy to the edges of the outer fiberglass skin of the transom and over the heads of the screws holding the skin to the plywood, and lay a strip of fiberglass cloth over the epoxy.
Removing stringers and/or a transom with out properly supporting the hull can result in a deformed or "oil canned" hull. Remember, the cantilevered load of an outboard motor puts significant loads on the middle of the transom. Circular saws, pry bars and chisels can be used to remove core. Occasionally decks and cabin sides will delaminate from the core. Ten years ago, I replaced the plywood transom in my 16′ aluminum fishing boat. It has a long pot life, is a simple 1:1 mix, and remains slightly flexible after curing. Don't use petroleum jelly on your skin when working with fiberglass or epoxy resin; it doesn't dissolve and gets gooey in hot weather. Matching color and texture at a corner is less critical because the transom corner acts as a visual break. No epoxy effectively adheres to wet wood, and CPES™ certainly will not displace liquid water. If you use outdoor carpeting, we strongly recommend that at least two coatings of CPES™ be applied to the surface first, and allowed to cure. Doing these two things is termed as 'wet on wet'. 10) Drill new lag bolt holes in the resin/sawdust mix, and screw in the lags. If there are soft spots in the transom of your boat, it may be time to reinforce the transom with a composite core material.
Another method of core installation involves laminating a piece of plywood before attaching it to its intended location. 7) Now, if there is any wood remaining inside the stringer fiberglass laminate, pour in slowly our mixed Layup & Laminating Resin. Placement: Placement is essential when it comes to reinforcing your boat transom. Sometimes they require repair as well, and we do cover this process under Stringer Repair in a later section. There is no penetrating epoxy except CPES™ that has the ability to deeply penetrate bad wood areas, and almost all glass boat transoms have wood cores. 2) Remove any aluminum plates or other items have been added to improve the structure. If there is wood involved and you suspect deterioration or rot, you can apply CPES™ first to the holes, but this will mean waiting for at least a week for the carrier solvents to evaporate away. A structural failure will surprise you when these things happen to your boat.
It's important in these kinds of repairs to use our Layup & Laminating Resin, because it has a slower setting (time to settle) and because it will never shatter or crack under loads. It's not a complete solution because you can't see what you're doing, but it will supply some substance and stiffness to the stringer. But even if you aren't operating your boat at top speeds, it is still a good idea to reinforce the transom. The unthickened epoxy should be applied on the exterior of the transom. But contact with water can cause wood to rot after a while.
On sailboats, especially, this can be a nightmare, with all the hardware scattered around. Fiberglassing the transom is the ideal solution. As the epoxy cures, screws in the plywood sheets will keep them in place. Even so, use a respirator to protect against solvent fumes.
Finally, sand the cured surface, then paint with a water-barrier coating or cover with non-skid flexible covering. Should probably be replaced as well. This tape is stronger than traditional woven tape due in part to its fiber orientation (45/45 degrees). The flat bottom of the sections should receive two coatings, and the top one coating. It will never shatter. Getting new wood into areas that is above the mounting holes will involve bedding it in our Fill-It™ epoxy filler (after CPES™ treatment, of course) and propping it in place for 24 hours until the filler cures. A little more about Biaxial Cloth: Biaxial Cloth is available in several weights.
One of our customers used the shop vac and some attachments to help dry out the core, see an example of this in our Rotten'Zine article from our customer. 1) Fiberglass boats can be built with thick hulls and thick bilges, but the transom is usually much thinner than the rest of the boat. When the time is right, use a notched spreader to apply the glue to the plywood. Step 6: Sand the surface of the fiberglass boat transom down with an orbital sander making use of fine-grit sandpaper to make sure that it is as level as possible before you begin painting on top of it along with your epoxy paint or primer. Now is when the transom template comes in handy, you use it trace out your inside skin pieces. Adjust viscosity by adding more or less filler to achieve consistency between that of ketchup and mayonnaise. On a sailboat hull this is less a of a problem because the floors are generally covered and the water doesn't get there. To cover the void inside, mix the two-part epoxy for a thin coating. I chose to reinforce the fiberglass transom with 12 oz. Keep a copy of the papers for future reference. Longitudinal Reinforcement: Longitudinal reinforcement is extremely important for boats over 16 feet. The fiberglass transom weakens when it gets old and brittle so the need to fix it is inevitable.
It doesn't solve the whole stringer problem, but much of the stringer strength is in the fiberglass "hat-section" formed by the stringer itself. Measure for the materials needed, cut them to size, lay on top of the damaged area and cover in resin, wait for at least 24 hours before removing tape or releasing pressure. Lastly, you need to tab the core to the hull's sides and bottom. UPDATE: After 2 years, the original repair repair mentioned above is still going strong according to the customer. These loads are concentrated on the fiberglass skin and core where the mount is located. All the layers can be installed and clamped in place at the same time if you like.
You were taught that when you first received your box of crayons. After the removal of the old transom, you have to do the cleaning. After the repair, the glass panels are bonded back in place with Layup & Laminating Epoxy Resin™ and the cut grooves filled with Fill-It™ epoxy filler, the surface sanded and then painted with a polyurethane paint. The transom also needs to absorb the shock of hitting rough water and waves.
