The book mostly deals with the government's response but its quiet moments are truly terrifying. Anna Kate is easy to like as is Natalie, the other main character through whom the story is told.
Every side of the ancient truck bore the words MCLAREN'S YOU NEED TO MOVE WE... Nothing becomes of the article, and the chapters are about sixty seconds, if that. All in all, a great read that gave me what I was hoping to get out of it! Several of us were surprised and agreed that we did not pick up on that but thought it seemed reasonable (as far as any book about shape shifters is reasonable). In the end though, I have decided to make Hummingbird Cake, because it is a Southern classic, and because I really wanted to make something with cream cheese frosting. Light hearted, evocative and heart warming its stories like these that remind us of the joy reading brings. Natalie and her mother hadn't had a good relationship from the time Natalie was a toddler.

For Natalie, the untimely death of her husband leaves her and her daughter Olivia (aka Ollie) back in Wicklow. I also liked Natalie and her little girl. Makes perfect sense why you are dead set on honouring the promise instead of thinking for yourself and of your future happiness. She has inherited Zee's cafe, The Midnight Cafe, but there is a catch. This is a feel-good novel set in Wicklow, Alabama that borders on new-age religion. It was the hottest year on record in the city and the morning sun was already beating down on the back of his neck. Natalie has a young daughter and resides in her parent's guesthouse. There are two or more voices telling the story and it's well done. Like magic, the town finances and the town spirit are revitalized, all due to the blackbirds.
There was something quite special and unique about Wicklow, though. There's no way to overcome it. 🤔 The story itself wasn't bad, I didn't love the narration. Every character is special in their own way and contributes something unique to the story. It was painful to try to force myself through and I don't mean to be harsh but this was not even close to my cup of tea. I forgot to turn off Wifi on my iPad and the loan expired so I lost access to the book and hadn't uploaded my notes so I went to renew the loan and the library's license for that title had expired. I had to forgive the story because this book is about Anna Kate discovering her purpose and allowing herself to lead a life she wants in the way that will lead to her happiness and fulfillment.
The book alternates between Anna Kate's and Natalie's points-of-view. In this haunting book, the dead return, not as zombies or vampires, but exactly the same as they were in life. There are slight (keyword) elements of magical realism in this story and overall, I enjoyed the kind and likable community of Wicklow. Natalie doesn't get along with her mother but has nowhere else to go.
