Whoever wrote this understands nothing about psychology as the characters reactions to events were preposterous. I thought this movie was excellently acted, directed and shot. If you haven't seen A History of Violence – you should!
But that being said overall, "A History of Violence" is above par entertainment, and despite it's flaws it's an important piece of filmmaking, one that only further improved the director's already impressive career. As an example of the movies graphic violence, the bloody vestiges of one man's face is shown in close up, with his jaw missing and blood and muscle oozing out of it. But after that opening shot, the movie halts sharply and abruptly, Josh Olson's (who received multiple nominations for this) script is a bit on the jumbled side, establishing the Stall family is an endurance test for the first 20 minutes or so; it's quite deliberate in it's execution, and in the beginning it feels forced, especially the dialogue which is clunky and overdramatic. Nevertheless, there's a lot to admire here. The children have their own mini-stories as well. It`s the events preceding this scene that I found a bit flat. Tom's wife, Edie, played by Maria Bello, opens the front door and tersely greets the sheriff. When he opens his mouth the differences between them become even more pronounced. The range of its narrative is fascinatingly wide and it excels on each peak moments that it dares to achieve. The director`s video diary of the screening of the movie at Cannes Film Festival and the interviews etc. Tom's mutation into a killer is surely startling. I promise, I am not exaggarating when I give this a rating of 1. From the first 5 minutes i realized that the movie was slow, and i was kinda hoping for it to be like a cool directorial thingy, but it's not, it kept going like this making the movie painful to watch. Unique in how they really get under one's skin, explore complex and difficult themes not explored an awful lot by other directors without any sugar-coating or excessiveness and how many of them disturb and makes one feel uncomfortable.
The movie ends A History of Violence has it's plus points (a good story, some cool over-the-top murder action and some kinky sex) but they're offset by some ham-fisted scripting, flat direction and too many sub-plots that don't come together. I don't get to the theater as much anymore, but when I do I want my precious time, not to mention almost ten bucks a ticket, to be worth it. Neither the script nor Viggo Mortensen gives us a clue whether Tom and Joey are the same person, or whether Tom is the victim of an unfortunate coincidence. What could have been a somewhat interesting plot became secondary in scope and importance to the showing of soft pornographic sex scenes and gruesome violence. But we also see hints of something else - a darker, more decisive personality. Cronenberg is a good director, but the script is garbage. Couldn't the writers have found a better way to put Jack in a threatening situation? If it kicks off feeling a little too made-for-TV (a little too saccharine on the domestic bliss angle? Jack acts betrayed whereas I believe most sons would have been curious. The first 5 minutes are predictable and from there it disintergrates before your very eyes. Small town family man and business owner Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) gets into more than he expected when he violently but understandably derails an attempt to rob his diner; nationwide notoriety, reporters and gangsters appear to threaten his perfect family life and maybe expose some less-than-savory truths that he'd vastly prefer remain submerged.
While this scene unfolds, the audience wonders if his family will ever forgive Tom and if they will continue to be a family and live the life they had established for themselves before the recent altercations. But every time I pass up a movie rated poorly for one that is critically acclaimed I wind up sitting there wishing I went to see the movie all the critics panned. The ending is so preposterous it is not even worth commenting about. Next time I go to the movies I'm going to skip the due diligence and ignore the critics until after I've seen it. Director David Cronenberg must have faced a bit of a dilemma when it came to casting someone in the lead role of this film. By the film's climax, we know all of what people did, but not necessarily why they did them. Shore, who also scored the Lord of the Rings films, appeared as a Rohirrim soldier in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). The scene that brings the sex-violence nexus to the boiling point takes place about an hour into this tightly wound 98-minute film, shortly after the revelation that Tom Stall, the central character played by Viggo Mortensen, used to be Joey Cusack, a big-city gangster who once ripped another man's eye out with barbed wire. Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello in A History of Violence. History soon breaks open into a meditation not only on sensationalism and violence, but also, and more emphatically, on identity and masculinity, as these notions are entangled in U. S. self-puffing mythology.
He has a similar look and can get away with smiling very little. Its a difficult film - sometimes difficult films are good - great in this case. And who had the bizarre idea to This just wasn't a very good movie. In the scene, Fogarty, his chest blown open by a shotgun, the exposed ends of ribs smoking, nonetheless rises from the floor and aims a handgun at Tom. A History of Violence certainly lives up to its name, containing some very graphic violence. That one really caught me by surprise. I enjoyed this film even if it's not your typical film by David Cronenberg. The movie was just flat-out boring. Too bad he was overlooked by the Academy, although they did nominate William Hurt for supporting actor; for one scene and less than 10 minutes of screen time. It takes a master to truly create such a dense, epic and important movie in just ninety minutes, which Cronenberg of course does. In a story of blood and vengeance, Mr. Cronenberg asks us to look at those who pick up guns in our name, protectors who whisper they love us with hands around our throats.
Double Identity: David Cronenberg's A History of Violence. Cronenberg is known for the violence in his films and nothing much changes here, it is all necessary though. He asked his stunt man whether or not he had any stunt pads to soften up the stairs.
But I do feel this story would have done well with twenty more minutes, letting some of the scenes flesh out a little bit more. I do *not* recommend this movie - even to adults! As the Stalls must deal with the new, dangerous presence in their life, they must grapple with questions of identity. The violence is over the top because of this have you seen other graphic novel movies? Liked it rather a lot, almost strangely so. Stream or download episodes directly from our website, or listen via your favorite podcatcher! In the beginning, I was willing to give the movie a chance, after reading the summary it seemed like it would be an alright movie. How the movie critics do fawn over Cronenberg!
