And, expanding the analogy with terrorism, if Moses can be considered a terrorist, the strategy Ramses uses to counter him serves as an excellent critique of current American antiterrorist tactics, since all his violent gestures to restrain the revolt only serve to intensify it. When God is an annoying child and Moses is a boring dud, being an awesome Pharaoh is a huge problem. Style: uplifting, captivating, stylized, exciting, biblical... We mostly know Edgerton as the scruffy tough guy of contemporary fare like Animal Kingdom, Zero Dark Thirty, and Warrior. One can excuse Christian Bale for being wooden, but Ben Kingsley is a great actor and quite often he looks lost in the movie as the Jewish elder, Nun. Exodus: Gods and Kings is one of the year’s worst movies - Vox. Ewen Bremmer, of all actors, as the sort of court-jester-summarizer of the plagues steals the show far as supporting players go. Indeed, some sappy noodling with Moses's wife aside, the last 20 or 30 minutes of Exodus are rumbling and persuasive, making a compelling case for the movie's existence. Moses thinks this is hogwash and says as much.
Astute direction by Scott, with terrific supporting performances from John Turturro, Sir Ben Kingsley, Aaron Paul, Maria Valverde, Dar Salim, and Sigourney Weaver. Whilst the Hebrews are desperately crossing Moses stays behind, half way across, to have a one to one face-off against Ramesses as the huge tidal wave of sea comes crashing back into place, because its clearly an action flick. Ramses banishes Moses. Movies like exodus gods and kings cross. He appears in the scenes always in the figure of a child: a boy who, now and then, even acts in a spoiled way. This Moses is more general than prophet, and he gradually comes around to believing in God, of course, even if he sometimes argues with him about the best course in freeing the slaves. Then, in a tiny debate about God, Moses says "why isn't it enough to believe in yourself? " The messenger, by the way, is a young boy. As for Biblical accuracy, well starters I don't believe Moses has ever been depicted as a hardened, sword wielding badass in the Egyptian army, plus we never really see him with a staff, he's mostly got his ornate sword. Moses never fails to object to God's actions if he believes they are indeed questionable.
Soon, a young man, Moses, and his adoptive brother, Ramses, are being told that the Hittites are invading Egypt. EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS retells the biblical story of Moses, who, according to the book of Exodus, suffered near death during infancy, was adopted into the Egyptian royal family, defied the Pharaoh, freed the Hebrews and parted the Red Sea. Style: epic, exciting, brutal, dark fantasy, stylized... An intelligent and eloquent man, this Moses is not a spiritual man. Not only that, as the very performance of Joel Edgerton, who plays Ramses, also doesn't illustrate the transformation very well: contrary to what his dialogues suggest, he doesn't seem to feel great affection for Moses right from the outset, often appearing with a hard countenance and a forced smile when he is close to his brother – a feeling that is further reinforced by his reaction to a prophecy uttered at the beginning of the film.
When Ramses refuses to free them, a series of devastating plagues are unleashed upon the Egyptian people. Scott truncates the final 40 years or so of Moses' life, so that all of a sudden he's an old man on the verge of reaching Canaan. Released Year: 2014. Other ellipses, however, feel even more artificial, such as the one that cuts the death of Seti (John Turturro), father of Rameses. Ramses II is played brilliantly by Joel Edgerton, but almost too brilliantly. It feels very empty. Ramses casts Moses out, but rather than immediately lead a revolt of the slaves, Moses just kind of wanders around for a while, marries Zipporah (Maria Valverde) and hangs out. It's not any one thing especially that is particularly so wrong with Exodus: Gods and Kings, but an overall gloom and doom that befalls the film, the deadly serious tone, that keeps it from reaching to a higher plain of epic-filmmaking existence.
