It was a good icebreaker. Going to a music festival alone also comes with a little bit more responsibility than when going with your fest fam. It was Global Dance Festival 2016, and Bassnectar was announced as the headliner. Gum is always a good thing to keep on you as well, just offer it to random people and you have more friends. Even if I hadn't met anyone, and even if I had needed that padlock on my tent, it would have been OK. Only have to think about yourself. More importantly, you'll want to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially if it's going to be a hot day! Go See the Artists YOU Want to See. So here I am with a radical solution: Attending Music Festivals Alone. Generally speaking, people are far more friendly when attending a music festival. If you are scared to talk to people, tell them you lost your friends and ask them to tag along.
But don't shy away; welcome it, embrace it, and make it your friend. However, going to this music festival felt a little different, but also helped me see what works (and what doesn't) and made me reconsider if I'd ever do it again. You get a sudden rush of panic. Riding solo at a music festival means you are the big boss. One might still worry that despite being surrounded by moonlit mosh pits and wild groups boozed up on forest fruit cider, going to a festival alone will be a nomadic experience. You are choosing not to block the clarity that music can provide for any of us. A rather taboo subject, this self-emancipation practice might not seem like a rare bird at first glance.
Also, drink lots of water! So as a fellow introvert I'll break down what to have in the back of your mind to make your experience favourable. That said, my fears and anxieties weren't enough to actually stop me setting foot on the ferry to the Isle of Wight. Even though I'd used it before I just couldn't work out how the poles went in the holes. Although there is a sense of normalcy returning, it's still important t... Always be smiling and approachable. Festivals are the absolute PERFECT place to make new friends. Don't bring anything valuable that you would hate to lose, as sometimes, people don't act like their best selves. That way, you have some people to hang with when you get to the venue. I had a great time on my own at Latitude Festival but if you're the only one from your crew that wants to go to a particular one, and the thought of it wracks your nerves,, don't let that stop you. The moments are brief at times, but always impactful. You can piggyback on their skills until you have a bit more confidence of your own.
Take Part in an Activity. MIDDLE OF THE PACK: The hardest part for me about going alone to a festival is waiting to get in, but it doesn't last long. I really want to help people embrace the solo life and get out and experience music festivals and really hope that this has helped at least one person out. And since you're already researching about it, I think that you are definitely ready. People always love it when you give them fun little surprises at a festival.
As I was getting off the ferry, someone asked me if I was volunteering (a massive rucksack and wellies gave it away). Chat with people on the plane to the festival destination, in your shared uber, and/or on public transport towards the venue. Remember to enjoy the experience, allow yourself to have fun, and listen to yourself if you realize you don't feel good about being there.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF EVEN MORE! Scared enough that, tucked away in my ridiculously heavy rucksack, alongside shorts, sandals and cans of Strongbow, was a padlock. It's hard—many of us have an ingrained habit to pull out our phones whenever we're alone, but staying glued to your device makes you less approachable. This doesn't mean that you can't have fun, but it's an important reminder to watch out for yourself, too. You have no idea if the people in groups around you have been friends for 5 years or 5 minutes. Never be afraid to ask for help! Tell everyone you have tons of oatmeal to share in the morning so they don't have to spend money on food. When you're solo, you sometimes can forget yourself and push your limits. Chat with people in line to get in.
Use the dancefloor to connect with like-minded souls who are also there to have a good time. Even if that person can't help you, they can find someone who can. The duration of the festival will also dictate what you need in regards to supplies and food. Going solo cuts chains and lets you do everything you want to do, without feeling the need to keep with the group or please others. Nothing is worse than being stranded or homeless, especially when you're riding solo!
I would have the odd conversation here and there, and these always ended with a high-five and hug. By the end, we'd met so many new people that I lost count. Wander around and explore the festival grounds in their entirety. Neighbor campers are especially target-festival-friends. Read the room and if the conversation isn't flowing and others are not receptive, then just say goodbye and move on. To be completely honest, I was scared. Important things happen in Pacific Northwest nightlife, and DMNW will send you alerts! Get to see loads of bands. If you're looking for less stress and a simple option, hotel lodging is the perfect solution because you don't have to worry about packing a car full of items. So, I wasn't exactly throwing myself into the experience with wild abandon. However, if you're looking for a room after most of the hotels are booked, you may have to stay farther away from the venue.
If it is free camping (you can camp anywhere), try to find a spot next to a fun-looking or social group who are sitting around or playing music. Click here for the disclosure statement.
