In 1900 Valentin Haass sold the Anvil for $275 to twenty-six-year-old Fletcher Davis of Marshall County, Mississippi, a partner of another of Haass's sons, Henry. The Hondo Anvil-Herald was a weekly newspaper with roots starting as early as 1886. He bought out the paper in 1893 but sold his interest in 1894, when he was elected county judge.
