After about 150 pages, several members of the group have died, which is certainly realistic but doesn't mesh well with the idea that none of the Raven had been killed in battle in years. All of which was action-packed, but all that action cost Barclay in the development of his characters. Instead an after effect was that a hole has developed in the sky. He believes Lyana is the queen prophesied to save the world, and with the help of his favored spy, hidden deep in the highest ranks of the dove royal house, he will stop at nothing to have her. Also the deal with the Shamans was never fully explained and I am very confused - it is said that Wesmen have no magic but Shaman are wesmen (I think?? ) For a moment, this can take you out of the story, as the carefully weaved tale suddenly becomes a bit of an info dump. I could go on about the interesting magic system in the world, or the religion and lore, but it's best to go into most of it blind. But, I think that's kind of the point - the characterisation is developed throughout the whole book, with us learning more about the protagonists and antagonists along the way, and I feel this works brilliantly.
