It's solid 2000s metalcore as it has existed for the past couple decades, with solid chops to bolster some compelling symphonic twists. A superb record and one of, if not the best metal albums of the year. Following a studio drought after the breakthrough of 2013's Uprising, Shrine is the third album from this Scottish mob in a fertile five-year period. Hidden comments will still appear to the user and to the user's Facebook friends. This heaviness is integrated expertly into all of the songs on the album, with the contrasting harsh/clean vocals throughout feeling more part of an expansive storyline rather than a musical fall back designed to be genre specific. It is everything we've ever wanted to accomplish as a band, and it has inspired us beyond belief. It feels fresh and varied throughout owing to some inspired experimentation on the bands' part. The br00tal kid Myspace wave notwithstanding, deathcore shares with its metalcore counterpart an affinity for melo-death riffs—which might explain why Bleed From Within made the switch from the former genre to the latter so easily. In fact, "Shrine" is so good that it's a victory in and of itself. Given what a statement of intent Alive seemed to be on release it feels slightly disingenuous that it's been tacked on at the end of the album. We are in a constant state of self-improvement as the band continues, so up until this point, we can honestly say that Shrine is truly our finest work. Metalcore (or metallic hardcore) is a fusion music genre that combines elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk. But Jubilee weekend sees the release of album number six: Shrine, on which the quintet have not only further enhanced what we all already know – that they are a dangerous musical beast – but also that they have creativity by the boat-load and aren't afraid to use it. When it does, just give in to the urge and spin it again. As with other styles blending metal and hardcore, such as crust punk and grindcore, metalcore is noted for its use of breakdowns, slow, intense passages conducive to moshing.
Bleed From Within understands the potential of melody in metalcore to expand their soundscape, rather than diminish its impact. While the mix on Fracture felt a bit mellow, almost as if drowning out some of the energy the band clearly possesses, Shrine has a more punchy mix that elevates the already potent, anthemic sound of the band. Add in the crunchy riffs by Craig Gowans and Davie Proven, you have the perfect formula for a banger. "Levitate" stands out in its violin driven melody infused with the band's melodic riffage. Songs like "Levitate" highlight this brilliantly, with ferocious percussion that guides the songs through ruthless breakdowns and riveting, soaring choruses both. Shrine is set for release on June 3rd via Nuclear Blast Records. Mournful piano chords find a scaffolding amid an overwhelming surge of cinematic heaviness, while strings stab through bassist Davie Provan and Richardson's moody groove. Of course, its no use doing something if the quality isn't there and, fortunately, Era has quality in spades. For more than 17 years Scottish metal outfit Bleed From Within have ruled the European roost when it comes to genre-blending. While Shrine doesn't reinvent the genre, it does reinvigorate it. Opening with one of the three singles in I Am Damnation amid a swirling mass of industrial style chantings and whispered vocals, Bleed From Within set the tone for an album with no rules or limitations, bound by nothing except the will of the five band members. The biggest surprise comes in the form of Flesh and Stone, which also shows a few gothic tendencies and epic moments and could certainly be filed in the Symphonic Black Metal cabinet.
