While not it's not a 'gritty' series at all, I find it comfortable and reliable with interesting mysteries that allow me to gather clues along with the detective and try to sort the puzzle out for myself. A case with enough momentum to recharge this series and grab new readers with its pull. They stand on more equal ground than most masters and servants, and their relationship is pleasant to watch, as is Lenox's bond with his brother. Asked to help investigate by a bumbling Yard inspector who's come to rely on his perspicacity, Lenox quickly deduces some facts about the murderer and the dead man's origins, which make the case assume a much greater significance than the gang-related murder it was originally figured as. He has a great sense of humor and in this book that quality about him really shines. One of the things I like about this series is, although there are back stories and personal plots for many of the characters in the series, Lenox included, it never becomes the focus of the story but rather stays focused on the mystery. Though it's considered a bit gauche for a man of his class to solve mysteries (since it involves consorting with policemen and "low-class" criminals), Lenox is fascinated by crime and has no shortage of people appealing for his help. Remember when right-wingers railed against looting as if that were the story? "There's such rawness in everyone — the mix is so different than usual, the same amount of anger, but more fear, less certainty, and I think more love. " But the Duke's concern is not for his ancestor's portrait; hiding in plain sight nearby is another painting of infinitely more value, one that holds the key to one of the country's most famous and best-kept secrets. The supporting characters burst with personality, and the short historical digressions are delightful enhancements.

I found plenty to entertain myself with in this book and I especially loved seeing the early relationships with many of his friends and colleagues as well as his family. I love the period details of Lenox's life, from the glimpses of famous politicians (Benjamin Disraeli, William Gladstone) to the rituals surrounding births, weddings, funerals and the opening of Parliament. Thankfully, Finch did.
The mood reminds him of when the first pictures of Earth were sent back from space and "for eight or nine days there was a sudden belief that since we had seen that we all lived on the same blue planet, a new era of peace might begin.
